I've read the previous post on this subject before, but maybe I can belatedly report my experience.
A year or so ago, a couple of buddies and I turned off the N2 at Coldstream determined to 'do' the pass. Ignoring the closed signs we managed to bypass the earth bank and barrier (even two guys on fully laden touring R/T's).
We found extensive repair work taking place on the collapsed sections, and our presence caused no surprise or consternation among the work crews. We got plenty of friendly waves and no hostility whatsoever.
I would hardly think that all that work was being done if they didn't intend to re- open it at some stage? Eh?
