Another really great ride into the Karoo with plenty of new faces. Also good to see someone else rides a DR 650. I will put together a small video clip plus a full report later today. Still trying to get over the heat after 5 degree days in Europe.

Andy's Touws River ride

I had nearly forgotten what it was like to meet at the Winelands One Stop on the N1 with the sun already high in the sky and the temperature already climbing into the 20s.
It was 8am as Andy 660 welcomed 4 riders, Schummie 64, WC, Tai and Pappa Beer, which he had never ridden with before and myself for another long day in the saddle heading via Bains Kloof, Wolsley, Ceres, Theronsberg pass into the karoo and over towards Sutherland and via the Patatsvlei road to Touws River and home over Ouberg Pass, Montagu, Saggy Stone Brewery outside Robertson, Villiersdorp and over Franschhoek Pass .
On entering Wellington a DR 650 pulled up alongside me and the rider asked if he could join the ride. At last a bike that my bike would be able to keep pace with. We pointed upwards to Bains Kloof and he followed.
On reaching the first view point we all stopped and the newcomer was welcomed and introduced as well as having his old but magnificent DR 650 admired. It has the same motor without an oil cooler but includes an 18l steel tank.
One wonders what the manufactures are doing when they downgrade to a 11 litre tank forcing owners to buy larger plastic tanks.
Our first fuel stop was in Ceres with a quick leg stretch before setting off up and over Theronsberg pass and onto the gravel heading towards Sutherland.
After 7km we turned right again now heading for Matjiesfontein via Patatsvlei.
Now we have ridden this route several times and Andy many more and he had picked up on the maps an alternative route over the mountains heading to Touws River.
And it just as spectacular as the previous route heading through long kloofs with mountains towering left and right.
Unfortunately Tai hit a piece of sharp stone and puncture number one had to be repaired.
The stone had gashed the tyre so he had to insert two plugs, which in the beginning appeared to hold but after a few more kilometres and close to Touws River the plugs pulled out.
He plugged up again bought a can of puncture foam and set off slowly on the tar for Worcester while the remainder set off onto the gravel towards Montagu. Sad to see a great companion leave the pack.
We all passed through Montagu but on the way from Robertson to Saggy Stone Brewery Schummie 64 suffered a puncture. This time a tubed wheel.
Fortunately we all managed to get to the Brewery where thanks to plenty of home brewed beer acting as the best lubricant Andy changed the tube.
With a great lunch over and plenty of beer we all headed off home with most of the party going via Worcester and the remaining three riding to Villiersdorp and home over Franschhoek pass.
And we recorded another great day another 540km in the saddle and thanks to Andy and the great party a trip well worth riding again and again. Hoping to ride with the group again soon.
Especially seeing that one can refresh at Saggy Stone.

Hi guys, it was nice to meet all of you and it was a great ride. Sorry I had to bail, but that tyre would have spoiled the rest of the trip. I hope to have a bit more luck with the punctures on the run.
I've managed to make it to Worcester where Mr. Ys help me out with one of those Muchroom type plugs that lasted all the way home, but the tyre is a gonner.

Andy thanks for all the help, I did not use your air bombs, so I will return it some time this week.
