Got our GreenCards
« on: July 28, 2007, 02:48:32 pm »
Ye ok, immigration visas to USA. Only when in US can you get the actual greencards. Well, we have the immigration visas and should be there not later than Dec 2007. Otherwise, gone.

So, my question "What is the cost and how can I get my Zonkmobile to US?" I do NOT wanna sell it but take it with.

Anybody know of a shipping company I can contact, costs etc?

Please help this poor fairy  :-[

O yes, I do not mind taking it there myself, but there is till water to cross, no matter what.

WTF?

You going for good or just working there for a while? You sure it's a proper green card not those you win on a pop-up add on the internet? :D

Sell you're bike, you can buy one there for cheaper than taking yours with. I can imagine you have quite a bond with your bike :)

There are big problems licencing foreign bikes in the US.  If the bike has not passed their roadworthy rules (ie if your bike is not available in the US) then you can forget about it - it is simply not possible to licence it there.
America is a real police state - if things are against their rules (& they have rules for everything) you are in trouble & the authorities are enforcing all the rules.

Agree with one of the posts earlier on Zonk,  the red tape and aggro will be more than enough to put you over the edge getting that bike licenced in the USA. Even though your specific model alpie is available there it would be easier just selling your bike and buying another one over there. So we getting some ride reports from Zonk about the Moab desert and Arizona soon then  ;D

I think it might be wise contacting xBananaman for some info  8)

Well, ja. Here is the story.

3 years ago, a friend of mine decided he was gatvol (he gets very negative sometimes) of the ZA stront. He asked me to subscribe to, Ja Michnus, one of those lottery things. It turns out a year ago they phoned me and we won. Winning meant that you have to go thru a screening process at the US consulate and some medical test, etc. I decided what the hell and, got it.

It is weird as they say you have to use an attorney to help you as it is very complicated. I did not and most of the form was scratched out mistakes and bad spelling. But it passed and we got our police clearance and military certificates, etc.

Now I have an immigration visa in my passport and my friend still don‚??t have anything. Funny how life works.

I love Africa and the people. I have absolutely no reason to go. Business is doing well, never ever been a target of crime. Have good friends black and white, etc. etc.

Now what to do? I will give up so much. I have never worked for a boss and there I will have to, to start off with. I have very little debt, got an awesome bike and stunning back roads, good climate, great skies, family, wilddog friends, well established business and customers, porn on the web (oops sorry, where is that backspace ;)) and much to be grateful for. So why should we be going? I don‚??t know.

But I do not see any harm in going for 5 years.

OK, it is a very difficult decision.

Kev, we will be staying in North Carolina (Apex). I have people there as I stayed in NC for over a year in my early 20‚??s. What I will be doing I don‚??t know but Dewayne (1 of my buddies) already lined up job interviews. Construction (huh?) and IT (which I would love to get out off, I hate IT). We will be taking a house from the 1st Jan 2008 which is also been arranged by Dewayne. Ye I trust him.

We (my family) will be going Nov 2007 and then my wife and 2 kids will return to close everything in ZA. I will be staying to receive the actual card. How it works is that when you enter the ‚??port of entry‚?Ě, they take all your documents that the US consolute in ZA gave us as sealed docs. They then send the docs to an office close to where you stay and within 3 ‚?? 4 weeks you receive the green cards thru the post. It actually goes quick. But this will give us time to finally decide what we want to do. We will not be selling our property at Jocobs baai. So if we decide to come back, we will not be staying in Gauteng, but on the west coast. I am also not getting rid of my shares in the business.

OK. That is the story. I am not getting younger  ::) so I have to make a decision very soon. But should I decide to let go of this opportunity, it sounds like I will never be able to apply again.

O yes, thanks for everybody for the info regarding Zonkmobile. It sounds like it would be better to sell the beauty.

And on this topic :evil5: , who is interested in a TransAlp, perfect condition  ::) , never been off-road  >:D, new tires (+-8000km on them), very little scratches  :angel9:  and the most important reason to buy this stunning bike, it only had one owner and the owner is a fairy :flower: (no not that type!!!  >:()

Good for you, best of luck. I hold dual nationality and about 3 years ago I had to find a job in the UK as I had been taken for a ride in a business deal. I stayed in London for just on two years. For the first year I found it very hard has it was a change of culture. The second year went much better. I enjoyed the UK and all that it offered. When the company went bottoms-up in the UK I tried to find another job but at that time the IT industry had taken a dive and most other business as well due to 9/11. In the end I had to return to SA.

I did find another job here, a lot easier than I had first thought. The question begs to be asked, why I continue to stay here admits the daily horrors we read about. It was only having lived somewhere else that one finds that each country has its ‚??Horrors‚??. I found the UK to be a nanny state, it was almost impossible to think for yourself. This was in all spheres of live. I also contracted a type of depression calls S.A.D which a lot of Saffies and Aussies get when they move to a different climate.

The other problem that I found was having been raised in the old ‚??Belgium Congo‚?? and lived in the surrounding neighbors, Africa runs through a mans veins. There‚??s just something about Africa that will never leave a person.

So, why the rant on my side. Cause I‚??ve lost two friends due to depression. Both having left SA and only to find that‚??s it‚??s not always greener. So remember my friend. There is a place where you can return.

Go and enjoy the experience, but always remember at the back of your mind there is a home to come back to.

Best of luck Zonkelnut. I'm also leaving the R of SA. But I'm going to a far cooler place - Mozambieck and my KTM and Prado will follow me ( did I mention my wife and daughter will also be joining me) :D

I find the people in Moz to be very friendly and they do not have that HATE thing going on...and I love prawns!!

cheers

Zonkie, cut your ties and go. Live your life like you ride your bike, look through the visor and not in the rear view mirrors. Buy that GS you always dreamed of. As we discovered together in Namibia, life is a journey and not a destination. We wish you well and have no doubt you will succeed. Besides which we need a place to stay when we there :D
