What documents needed to enter Namibia?
« on: March 12, 2012, 05:06:08 pm »
We're planning a ride through Nam and will trailer the bikes into the country. What documents should we take and what legal stuff should we know about? Apparently you only need your passport when entering ON your bike, but when you trailer you need a "clearance certificate" or something for the bike. Any advice?

As far as I am aware you must have the registration documents for all the vehicles.
If still being financed you need a letter of authority from the bank with a copy of the registration document.
So you will need papers for the towing vehicle, papers for the trailer and papers for the bikes.
If you do not own the vehicles then you need a letter from the owner with a copy of the registration certificate.

They don't always ask for the papers but it is not worth the risk of going without them.
What would life be like if we had no courage to attempt anything ?

My understanding is:
- ZA sticker
- Passport
- Proof insurance and license

Remember to take the receipt for the Namibian road insurance.  You will need this to get back into SA.

So we won't need special papers for the bikes being on trailers then? Won't they maybe think we are gonna sell the bikes there? This is stuff I've heard...

And road tax is per vehicle/bike.

Ensure you have enough cash on you to cover that. No ATM's at the borders.

ZAR will do.

We went to Nam. with Bikes on a trailer, special permit was needed ,a deposit was to be paid as a percentage of the cost of the bike, that was to be refunded after 6 months, too damm costly - then got an invite from a Nam. resident to bring the trailered bikes in, to be "his guest" on the farm, no cost involved here, this was in 2010, just play safe and find out at the authorities before you leave.

We are also leaving for Nam in two weeks time. I made some enquiries and what you need is the Following.
Passport
Registration Forms for Car, Trailer and Bikes. If they belong to the Bank you need authorisation from them.
Proof of Insurance.
As other dogs mentioned before, keep all your Paperwork that you get at the Border when you return.
No need for Deposits on Trailer and kak if you are Saffrican.
Current Bikes
KTM 790 R Rally
Harley Davidson Deuce

Great! Just your regular documents for crossing borders then.

Now for the trailer - we have 2 x 3 bike trailers, but they are used for carrying light plastics and I don't think they will be able to handle the weight of 3 DS bikes. 2 x Dakars and 1 x 990 is propably around 630kg? Those 3 x bike trailers can carry around 500kg if I'm right.

Where in PTA can we rent a trailer thats capable of carrying 3 x DS bikes?

The above is true and yes the road permits obtainable from the border is very important to have with you at all times. Just stick it to your screen.

It is a lot simpler if you offload the bikes just before the border post, ride it through and then load it back onto the trailer once you through.

If you require any invitation letters, please let me know.

Check on the side of your Trailer , there is a Sticker that tells you how much it can carry. I have a 3 Bike Travelite trailer (the name speaks for itself) and I have trailered 3 x990 KTM'S for long distances. Check your Wheelbearings before you leave.

Take spares with.

Even an extra spring leaf and bolts. The trailers takes a pounding on some of those roads.
