Thanks Panne!  :thumleft:

Holy moly, only 289 days....thats um,... 41 weeks!!!

Its starting late only on the 5th January - Don't they know we also have to work ?? What are these guys thinking??
I'm sad that its not going through Bolivia (unfortunately the helicopters do not mix with the altitude to well) , but 5 stages in Peru, 5 in Argentina, and 4 in Chile is going to make this one a real tuffie. They did three stages in Peru last year one was the last stage (not long or too tough), and the other two were shortened because they were too hard.  ::) The Peru stages are going to be killer.

Two high altitude crossings as well later in the rally, with the last four stages of fesh-fesh to finish off those who are taking strain. It's going to be a ball breaker compared to last year, guaranteed.

I'm going to give it a bash.  Not sure how really, but at least selling my Springbokkie is going to get me the entry fee paid...

More on my dream soon. I want to live it. AYOBAAAAA

http://www.supersport.com/motorsport/dakar/news/120321/Dakar_Rally_to_start_in_Peru_in_2013

Next year's Dakar Rally will start in Peru for the first time and end in Chile after crossing the Andes into Argentina, organisers said on Wednesday.

It will be the fifth year in a row that the Dakar, a gruelling event that started out as a race from Paris across the Sahara desert to the Senegalese capital Dakar, has been held in South America.

The event, which has claimed numerous lives over the years and will be in its 35th edition next year, was switched from Africa to Argentina in 2009 for security reasons.

The 2013 rally will start in Lima - the finish of this year's edition - on January 5 and end in Santiago on January 20, with a rest day in San Miguel de Tucuman in Argentina.

"Peru, Argentina and Chile, explored on a north to south journey, will offer the Dakar a different angle of attack on the Pacific Coast, the Atacama's dunes and the Andes Mountains," said Dakar director Etienne Lavigne in a statement.

Ooooo..................I was looking through the calendar and it says:

Over the last few years, the Dakar has also been on the move between editions, to meet the competitors and the media. The Dakar World Tour helps to maintain direct links and provide encounters in many countries for rally-raid enthusiasts. In 2012, nine dates have been scheduled, with a new stage in Southern Africa.

Dakar Tour in Southern Africa (Botswana) 15th May.......

This is a recce for 2014 FOR sure.  :deal:

Does anyone know whether there is a DVD available for 2012 and 2011?

Got one for 2010 - but it is very short and there is a lot of detail missing.
Everyone I come across in cages they bought
they think of me and my wandering
but I'm never what they thought
got my indignation but I'm pure in all my thoughts
I'm alive...

Don't think there's one for 2012 available yet. You can get a 2011 highlights dvd from here: http://www.dukevideo.com/Cars/DVD/Off-Road-and-Dakar/Dakar-Rally/Dakar-Rally-2011-DVD.aspx

So lets say, hypothetically speaking, that I could actually afford this:
What are the options for chasing the Dakar in 2013? On two wheels of course, preferrably mine but hired would also do.
Just dreaming, but what would this cost, ball-park? And who can I talk to?

Hiring a bike here is pretty damn expensive - around USD250/day.

However seeing that I plan to be riding my own bike, my 800GS will be available to you if you sponsor me lets say USD100/day.

Alternatively just ship your bike here along with my rally bike (which looks like it will not be sold :( in RSA after all ), I still need to find out how much that will cost. You would need to do a temporary import (no carnet needed). I will probably ship in July/August. Fuel in Peru is USD1/litre, and you can get by on anything between R150-R500/day for hotels + food

BB Have you tried the local Yammie dealers to sell your bike - they have a direct market - I had more success selling my bike through that channel.

Good idea. I'll try that. Decision time decision time. No buyer for my bike and in the next few hours I need to transfer money for a 2nd hand 450RR with factory forks and all the bling. He want Euro 21K for it. What do you guys reckon?

That's about ZAR 216,000 as I type this.  I think it's a very good price. The Yammie will sell. GO FOR IT! :thumleft:

Agree, your bike will sell, it may take a month or three.

If you say it quickly (R216k) it sounds great :thumleft:
