Weer was baie stormagtig. PE se watertafel is nou so hoog dat net bietjie reën die Dip oorvloei, so dis nie meer snaaks nie.

Just stumbled on this rather long vid clip of some dudes chasing PE flood water on the 14 July 2012. Shows pretty much all flooding areas in PE

Took a bit of a Down Town ride today. First to see what the staion looks like inside nowadays. Totally unimpressive. Gone is the little shop where we bought our Coke and chips while waiting for the train. progress kills the romance

Earlier we saw what was done to The Square. The rest of Main Street(now Govan Mbeki) went the same way. It used to be a great place where we spent our childhood. Sugar Bush, Hastings Sports and Tackle shop, where I used to drool over the knives, OK bazaars with its little cafeteria where my mother would buy us an ice-cream if we behaved.

I sat there a while dreaming of the Good Old Days, remembering the little side streets running down to Strand Street. Could never as a child figure out why one of them was called 'PIEL' Street. Later I found out it is 'PEEL' Street.  :imaposer:

This is it today. The city center died when businesses moved to Newton Park in the seventies after the free-ways were built. To get people back they tried to modernize and rejuvenate it. FAIL.

parralel to main Street and running next to the free-way is Swatkops Street. There used to be lots of factories making all sorts of stuff. Most of the buildings are now derelict

We move up along mainstreet to North End. Here is where the smaller shops and businesses were and some still are. I remember the beautiful old buildings fronting on the street. Some are gone now and others delapidated.

1. The law Courts building in the first pic is still beautiful

2. Accross the road used to be Lion's Fisheries. Dirty as anything but the best fish and chips anywhere.

3. A genaral view

4. The Red Lion Hotel in the back ground. Very popular joint in days gone by where arguments were settled witha broken bottle neck outside in the street.

5. Typical of what the buildings looked like.

It would be wrong to ride through North End and not get a few pics of The Stadium.

First a view from the front and then looking accross the lake, with a final wide shot which I thing looks pretty nice.

The Day the Music Died.

With the building of the free-ways, traffic by-passed the City Centre and businesses moved to Newton Park on Old Cape Road. The old Fair View race course sat on a prime piece of property that they could not afford. In its place came Greenacres Shopping centre, old buildings and houses were torn down and modern monstrosities built. Today Newton Park is the business centre of PE.
