610 valve clearances, 0.05mm !
« on: April 01, 2012, 12:07:27 pm »
Ok so after replacing my cam chain I checked the valves at the same time. All the specs says 0.002 inches which translates to 0.05mm. That is very fine, the smallest I had on my feeler gauge and by far the tightest on any bike I have owned. So being clever I decided to set them to 0.10mm or 0.006 inches. Loose valves are happy valves right ? Well on start up the top end is really noisy, no doubt it's the valves. Bike runs fine but the mechanical noise is overwhelming. Anyone checked yours and what did you set them at ?

The inlet valves on a Dakar are also set 0.05.  I had to get a thin feeler gauge set.  From Toolquip & Allied for R22 set FG17 has 0.02  0.03  0.04  0.05 0.06  0.07  0.08  0.09  0.10  0.15  0.20 etc up to 0.50
With just 2 feeler gauges you can go in 0.01 steps from 0.02 - 0.59 so know exactly what the gap is.

Big Pain --loosen the radiators and move them away without drainig them --still a pain anyway. Last did mine at 28,000 km now 25,000 still in spec -- ::) Dont forget to seal the tappit covers properly -- before you start a riot like someone did a while back --saying Huskies are K@K bikes after his covers were not put back properly hehe

Yeah did mine - managed by just moving the RHS radiator and overflow bottle (yes it does come out with persuation)... reminded me of the mackie would showed me a missing finger years ago and told me it was so he could work minis!  :o  Use the 0.05 spec - mine had never been done and at 10 000km it made a big difference. I trimmed my feeler down with a pair of scissors which made it easier. I see some manage to get shaped shorties abroad! Welsh is getting me a Wurth .05 with the BMW feelers deal  :thumleft:

No need to drain coolant --- i never did --but as you say overflow bottle also has to be pushed aside

Finished, took about two hours. Removed tank and two breather hoses on frame. Intakes were easy. For the exhausts I removed the bolts for the RHS radiator and pulled out the overflow tank. Did not drain fluid but disconnected small connector pipe going from top of RHS rad to LHS one. All set at 0.05mm, thanks for all the info  :thumleft:
