We are departing in less than a month to ride North to South, but we're starting from San Francisco, not Alaska. Perhaps we will cross paths somewhere along the way! I'll follow your thread Halfadog  :thumleft:

Good stuff! We are actually going South to North, starting in Argentina, so I reckon there's a good chance of us crossing paths, how long is your trip?

Good day Guys,

I am planning to do south America this year! Please share any information and tips you have.  I do not have any experience of traveling and will need all the help I can get.

Were is the best place to start from RSA to SA?
Who to use for shipping and estimated cost of it ( this will determine if I am going to backpack SA or live the dream and ride my bike there)
Medical aid and insurance! Especially insurance for the bike.
Any routes you would suggest I do not miss and others I should stay away from.
I would like to do Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador,Peru, Bolivia Chile Argentina. is that even possible! Especially worried about Brazil to Colombia.

I Plan to do it in 4 to 5 months.

Cheers

Where to start? Contact Dakar Motos in BA, they cater to motorcycle travelers and can arrange transport
Med insurance is a good idea, I have skipped on it but may give it a go when I head to north Africa
Insurance for the bike? Don't think you will find anything that will cover multi-countries, it is just a risk you will need to take.
To get the up-to-date skinny on all else get on HorizonsUnlimited.com (HUBB)

Someday I hope to get back to South America and spend more time

I rode to TDF in 2011.  Here is a link to my RR: http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=641039&highlight=klr2tdf&page=7

For me,the do not miss places were Machu Picchu, Salar de Uyuni, the Yungas Road in Bolivia (most dangerous road in the world),The Hand near Antofagasta,Chile, the Nazca Lines, the penguins near Ushuia, and Torres del Paine in Chile.

And if you are near  Buenos Aires, Dakar Motos is a good stop. I was there for several days. They were very helpful with shipping my bike home.
