The Hell - current state of accommodation?
« on: April 10, 2012, 03:33:10 pm »
Hi

Haven't been to Die Hel (Gamkaskloof) in ages but will shortly go down there on a non-biking family trip with other peeps. Not sure what the current state of accommodation is and will probably stay in one of the restored cottages belonging to Cape Nature as I have had a very pleasant previous experience staying in one of these before. However it will be quite a big gathering and other parties are looking at the caravans and camping sites of Piet se Staning. These were not so lekker in my experience, in fact I spent a night outside, next to the bike, rather than remain in the caravan last time I was down there. Has anyone been there recently and what are the current states of these places?

Thanks, people.

Sounds familiar. Thanks for the link, will check it out. Last time I was there it was more a question of to ablute, or not to ablute. Bit rof, especially on the downwind side.

Ablutions were clean, as were the caravans...

I won't easily sleep over again due to the spiders.... *shiver*

Rene (Dusty) and I were ready to head out after Tagsy almost swallowed one and had them running over our feet!

these little f$%^ers were a big problem last time, and for that reason alone I will avoid the caravans. Im not even scared of spiders, but that night was something else.
I believe Tagsy almost swallowed one that got into his drink, and Fatb was bitten by one during the night.

A spider cannot come into a zipped up tent

Like FC said, Ablutions were clean.

I didnt go into the caravan or one of the cottages though, so I cant comment on them. I have heard only good things about the cottages though. :thumleft:

Last time I went to Die Hel I realised that the best is to make it a one day trip and not sleep there.
If you go there in the afternoon, you are riding there with the sun in your eyes, and if you then sleep over and leave the next morning, you land up again riding out with the sun in your eyes.
(Unless you make sure that you do both trips at midday)

Tannie Annatjie's place has the camp and Oupa Piet Mostert se huis. Having stayed in almost every place available in Gamkaskloof I can tell you that Piet se Staning would be absolutely last on my list. It's atrocious.

The Cape nature properties are nice and well restored. Some pine furniture and duvets etc. though, so not really the "Hell experience" if you are interested in the history and how they lived back then. Also, just the houses are restored, around the houses there is nothing but thorn trees and dust. That's not what the hell looked like.

The place to be is Boplaas. It's the last (private) property in the kloof. You cannot get in there unless you stay there so stay anywhere else and you cannot see the whole kloof.

Their houses are restored well, true to history. Furniture is antique etc. Everything is clean and everything works. It is still a working farm and there are lawns etc. Gives a good idea of what an idyllic place the hell must have been.

Camping anywhere in hell is pure hell. ;D Baboons, Spiders, dust and thorns. It's kak don't bother. Houses are better. BUT I do believe Boplaas has a camping spot now too. Haven't camped there myself, but if you definitely want to camp that will be the best bet. At least it has a lawn and it seems nice. Much better than the alternative. ;)

With a keen intrest in nature, from what I read I wonder why the population of spiders appears to be very large? Or are they just nesting in the caravans and mostly encountered there?

Still, if there are so many spiders around, it could be that their natural predators have been taken out of the ecosystem  ???

It could also just be that it is The Hell afterall  >:D

If you are a big group and dont mind a big open plan sleeping area then speak to the conservation folk running he place. The space has tons of beds usualy for groups like scouts or schools it seems. I knew oom zanie who ran the place so he arranged this spot for me once. It is just before the river crossing to the consefvation office. Worth a look for a group willing to have some banter and not afraid of sharing. Seperate abolution facilities are ther as well.

Thanks Bigshot

Already booked in one of the Capenature cottages for this weekend. Going down there tomorrow. Will keep it in mind for future reference. By the way, I've met the Oom Zanie once but that was quite some years ago just after they had restored the first of the cottages. Is he still there?

Cheers

No Ooom Zanie retired a few years back. He now lives in Calitzdorp and takes folk into the hell as tour groups. He is a great story teller with massive knowledge on the area. Even some knowledge he wont tell the public ;D
Enjoy the stay. The cottages are great. Go and have a look at the cottages at the far end of the Kloof. They belong to a group of doctors. The one cottage has a reservoir behind it and in summer is the only place to book.
Enjoy the Kloof. Taste the wit blitz!!

Camping there is hell?  Ok, we were there 4 years ago.  We camped at Piet se Staning and we enjoyed it.  The caravans did look worn then already, but the ablution was great.  We are actually planning on going there again December.  What is the problem with campsites?

We camped at the Cape Nature campsite, in tents. It was dusty and when it rained it was muddy. The ablutions were clean and worked well. There are walls made from reeds in the ablutions and those spiders live in them. Fortunately spiders do not bother me at all and some girls needed me to protect them when they showered. Camping was cheap. The hiking trails are definitely worth exploring, they are well maintained, signs are clear, and really interesting sights to see on the trails that you do not see from the roads.
Look for a shooting star and see Lynda's trail and remember all the great places you shared with her,she will never forget what she shared with you and will show you that in every starry night .
