"Colour" Ride
« on: September 02, 2007, 09:20:00 pm »
Myself and Dirtrat left early Friday morning for George to have his 950 SE serviced.  At Swellendam, we both were gatvol of the tar and took the Suurbraak rd.  DR hasn't seen Gysmanshoek, so we quickly crossed that.

Dirtrat on top of Gysmanshoek

From there we took the road behind the mountain, and crossed over Garcia Pass to Riversdale for fuel.

Getting in George, we met up with Curly Lips, Dirtrat's brother-in-law, who flew down to pick up his new toy:

Congrats CL with your awesome machine!  Welcome to the Dark Side!

So we were 3 KTMers with a 950, 950SE and the new 990.  I put on a new front tyre, Dirtrat had to put on a new TKC on the rear (How's that? First service, new rear tyre!) and the new bike also had fresh rubber, so we decided to "burn" silicone off through Outiniqua pass.  We only left George at 5.30, so we had to sleep in Oudtshoorn, but the planned sleepover was Prince Albert.

After a long night of "you-know-what" and VERY little sleep, we headed for Swartberg pass.

And there she was

Very historic moment:  New KTM taking dirt for the first time!

heading up the mountain

Dirtrat on top of Swartberg

Coming down on Prince Albert side of Swartberg

Myself at the "Eerste Water"

A bike made for this hard country!

In Prince Albert we stopped at the Bush Pub for lunch and a cold one

Myself, Dirtrat and Curly Lips

Curly Lips getting the hang of his new machine, going back up Swartberg pass.

Top of Swartberg, looking South

Then we took the Groenkloof road to Calitzdorp

From Calitzdorp we took the Rooiberg pass towards Van Wyksdorp.  This was on top of Rooiberg, looking south

Entrance to Assegaai Bosch Game reserve - beautiful scenery

We raced to Barrydale, as the sun was setting fast.  Booked into the Country Pumpkin Bike lodge - very nice, cheap and clean.

Lo and Behold!  Saturday night was a carbon copy of the night before in Oudtshoorn!  Very friendly town of Barrydale!

We had executive parking at the Lodge!

CL left early, as he had to get back to S/West.  DR and myself went home via Malgas.

So to sum up the "Colour" ride, we did Swartberg twice, Groenkloof and Rooiberg in one day.  Total distance home - home. 882km.  Fun 100%, tired 100%, liver damage 100%, company 100%, bikes 100%.

Very cool!

Couple of dogs have been down lots of the same roads the past month or two.

Always 'lekker' to see photos of places where you minds eye can fill the blank at the edge of the photo from memory.

I take it the KTM's were in their element (and so where you I suppose !)

Nice ride - thanks for posting...

02/02/12 - RIP Glen - the Arrow of Elliot and the little man with the big heart that truly was larger than life.

You have touched us and left us better for having known you - even if it was only briefly.

For grabbing the moment and living the day It's been way too early that you were taken away

Nice one Uiltjie. So why not the Hell in the end?

We didn't have enough time.  It would've taken another 4 hrs to do, and we got to Barrydale in the dark already.

We will come back for that, and sleep over at the bottom.

Thanks for the info on Friday, we got permission to go in.

Nice one - great pics, great read.

I do not think that dying is a good idea.
Living doing something that you love is a good idea.
Living until you die is a good idea. If living happens to kill you it means you made a mistake, but we are human, and humans make mistakes, so go for it, enjoy it, live until you die, rather than not living for your whole life.

Oh yes!

The SE is far better suited for the rough stuff.  The 2 of us hit a big hole at speed, didn't bother the SE that much, but I had to fight to get everything in control.  When it comes to the long travel part, dirt or tar, I outperform him by miles.  He has to take a lot of wind and stiff arse after a while, while I'm not that tired after a long ride.  Also, the height of the SE is a problem when it comes to slow technical stuff.

Between the 950 and 990, there is almost no difference.  That 990 is more powerful at low revs, and accelarate better, but the 950's power is smoother.  Other than that, not much.

All 3 are awesome bikes!
