There was a potential Transport strike on the Monday. I needed to be back at the office in case it kicked off. But it didnt.

Hey Mitch, great ride report. Looks like you had a really good ride. Tommy Transalp, Rodger Dodger, Grantis, my son Superoo and myself were also down that way over this long weekend. We took the De Beers pass route down from Van Reenen as the wind at the Caltex Star Stop was so strong (a sign indicated it was blowing at 116 km/hr) and we did not want to dodge the trucks and cages going down Van Reenen with that. Even so, Grantis got blown right off the road, just before we went down De Beers. The wind just shoved him and his bike off the edge of a 1m drop off. Thanfully not too much damage was done and he was okay.

We then rode from Rosetta to Sani the following morning on Saturday via the lower Loteni road... what a stunning road... and got to the Sani SA boder post around midday.

You are so right about the okes in their flipping 4x4's. I counted 35 of them on the pass in various stages of trying to get up or down and they have no respect for guys on bikes. They just point their vehicles in some vague direction and the car does all the work. Even saw an oke taking his Porshe Cayenne up the pass. Must have more money than brains!!
After getting to two switch backs after where the grader was parked, we decided that the 4x4's were making it almost impossible for us to pick a line, commit and gas it to the next switchback corner, so we relunctantly decided that discretion is the better part of valour and we called it quits...

Except for Superoo who decided to go it alone and prove to the doubters out there that a KLE 500 will never make it to the top of Sani. Myth disproved. He was the only one of our group to get to the top.

Anyhow, the rest of us will have to wait another time to get to the top.

Glad you guys made it and had such an awesome time.

I think if we had cards and a few more bottle of Old Browns it would have been the perfect end to a good day  :ricky: I already packed a deck in my luggage for future trips...

Hey Richard
I think there is a possible ride in September. The 24th is a public holiday, if you take a days leave on the 21st we have a long weekend and a possible 3 night ride somewhere.
I would fancy a trip to lake Malawi or maybe a trip to Botswana or perhaps that Port St Johns trip we discussed.

Also August 9th is a Public holiday...

Aarg so many places so little time and money   :drif:

The 9th is out I'm afraid, have a company do in Clarens that weekend. Let's start planning something for the 21st - 24th.

Lessons learnt
Ensure all riders in your group know the route and are aware of possible meet up spots should they get lost or separated from the pack.

A good thing is to establish some kind of "riding protocol" before the time, to avoid people getting lost. As long as one guy knows the route, its fine. Always look out for the guy behind you, stop now and then to see if he/she is still coming along if the route is twisty and hilly. If something happens to the guy behind you, you will eventually turn around and go see whats going on. Everyone in the group does this and the group should stay intact. Oh and important, you wait for the oke behind you at a turnoff or T if you do not see him approaching.

Awesome ride you had!
Let's go into the mountains...there's likely to be peace and quiet
