But Honda gave the XR-L rider a new bike, despite him buying it through non Honda SA sources. Now THIS is service and back-up!!!

I speak under correction but what I understood about the XRL is that the bike was purchased from a non Honda dealer , BUT this dealer in turn obtained the bike from an official Honda dealer , so in actual fact Honda SA did import the bike , so they did actually have a responsibilty toward the client .
So although they did assist the client it was way too drawn out , the BMW issue was sorted within a day once the dealer principle had been made aware of the problem , that is the way these things should happen so I will happily complement BMW on their service .

Now perhaps you could amend the title of your post...
Glad it was resolved as it should have been! :thumleft:
Also think the subject header needs updating as it does not reflect the real story.

Thumbs up for donford. Just received the news from them that they will replace my back shock for my 1200 ADV for free, but I must only pay for labour. Bike out of guarentee and 31 000km on the clock.

my previous GSAs back shock also leaked at 31k and was replaced by goodwill, seems this is a common fault.

Well frankly I cannot see what you BMW fans are rejoicing about, did the dealer have any option other than to replace or refund? Of course not. If this buyer got his BMW through a grey source, I can guarantee you that BMW would NOT have touched him. But Honda gave the XR-L rider a new bike, despite him buying it through non Honda SA sources. Now THIS is service and back-up!!!
What this highlights though, is that the prospective Sertao buyer must beware! R80 000 is very expensive, and this thread does it no favours.

What make you so sure about that Oom Daan? I would imagine that BMW with their good service reputation would probably also have done the same, even just purely in an attempt to maintain that perception?

Not..there was this guy that bought a 650 from them (Donford) had it farkled to the hilt with Touratech goodies (I speak under correction, by Donford) and when the shit hit the fan, they told him to piss off.

I still went to have a look at the 650 "real" Dakar on their floor.

It is somewhere on the forum..check it out.

Seems Icemann is not the only one who had this problem:
THE SERTAO HOT START ISSUE (A line that pitched up on a few forum threads I've read so far)

Good to hear that Donford is replacing the bike with a new one. The only decent thing to do!
To put a different angle on this topic - I have been spannering on an older Loncin 200 scrambler
this weekend for a buddy of mine who knows nothing about bikes, just to get it on the road in a
semi safe and functioning way. Not good what i am seeing in terms of overall quality on the
Loncin at all. It's literally falling apart, rusting and perishing in all places. Motor seems to be good
though, its only done less than 7000km. Lets hope BMW did in fact address those quality issues
if it is now assembled by that same chinese manufacturer.
Having grown up in a family that has been riding BMW's for 3 generations i would run like hell
from any dealer who now due to economic factors has a BMW assembled in China. Just a
personal thing i guess.

UPDATE 2: My Sertao was replaced by Donford on 19/05! Brand spanking new!!!

Through this whole issue BMW Donford (Neil Berry) walked the EXTRA mile over and over!!
I have never seen so much commitment from a business to solve a problem!
THANKS Neil !!!!!!!

Hello Icemann, ek sien nou eers hierdie drama, wil jy miskien jou ou Dakar terug koop by my??  ;)  Sorry, not for sale  :deal:  :pot:

Baie bly vir jou jy is uitgesort.  But to be honest, I feel BMW had no choice but refund or new bike.  Simple as that.  Hats off to John Carr and Donovan at Donford, am sure they handled this situation in the best possible way  :thumleft:

i am off to Donford tomorrow to test the F800gs, F650gs and the Sertao, meeting the dealer principle at 13h00. Really happy to give them my business because of this.
