Zanzibar ‚?? Pretoria Aug 07 Part 1
« on: September 04, 2007, 11:32:19 pm »
My trip started the day when I agreed to the invitation to fly up to Zanzibar to fetch the Varadero and deliver it to its rightful owner. My companion Dolf Smook (a banker) was going to try his luck on the Transalp and we only met on the airport for the first time. We made it clear from the start that we are going to enjoy this trip and make the most of it. So here goes‚?¶‚?¶‚?¶‚?¶.

Day 1 - 7 Aug
Depart from Oliver Tambo Int Airport (still like to call it Joburg Int) and arrived at Kisauni Airport, Zanzibar. Dolf arranged for a shuttle to take us to Jambiani on the south eastern side of the Spice Island. That‚??s about an hour‚??s drive from Stone Town, the main town on the island. Unfortunately the shuttle broke down 10km from the lodge and our driver quickly summoned another shuttle within a few minutes.

We checked into the Casa del Mar lodge (+255 24 2240 400/ +255 777 455 446 - Salim Khatib ‚?? info@casa-delmar-zanzibar.com)

Being a Muslim community, they don‚??t serve any alcohol at the lodge (you can bring your own ‚??slangbyt‚??), but the most amazing non alcoholic cocktails I‚??ve ever tasted certainly made up for it. They also serve an excellent variety of seafood.

Day 2 - 8 Aug
After breakfast, we had a quick inspection of the bikes and Dolf discovered that his rear tyre had about 20% to go.

This was going to haunt him for the next 2000km and we eventually made our way to Stone Town to arrange for a transfer to the mainland. The ferry was leaving at 16h00 and we decided to rather spend another day on the island and do some sightseeing. The harbour and market was a bustling and noisy place where traders off loaded their goods and tourist were bargaining with the vendors for the best deal. After making our booking for the ferry, we saw this nice restaurant and made it our mission to include an African Beer Tasting Expedition in our trip.

Freddy Mercury was born on the island.

I see some beautiful pictures, looking forward to the rest.

Why did the chicken cross the road, I mean, whats the story behind the GP Vara in Zanzibar?
