DRZ 400E Not Idling and Miss firing under revs
« on: May 18, 2012, 05:43:09 pm »
Help, My DRZ is stranded in Kamiskroon. The problem started that the bike would not idle, it was as if someone hit the kill switch at 2400 rpm, we swopped carbs, spark coil and cdi unit with another DRZ and still the same problem.

The problem then developed to not running at all and only back firing if you tried to rev the bike, the symptoms were as if it was running out of fue, however fuel flow was fine and we had the same problem when we put the other DRZ carb on the bike,

I am now in Langebaan and have to recover my bike next week from Kamieskroon, would anyone know what the problem may be, ???

Sounds like valves. When last did you have the valve clearances checked?
If you don't live on the edge, you take up too much space!!!

stator also likely culprit, also check the plug under the left side panel with the three yellow wires from (they can make poor contact)

The head and the valves were done about two month ago when a welsh plug went in the head mixing water to oil so no water in the oil, the bike has run to the buff in mosselbay and ran fine after the head was done, also the  wire that goes to the spark plug coil was burnt,  so every thing points to the stator,  I am collecting the bike next week and will test the coil when i can get it back to a clean workshop ans not in the bush,

If in need the stator repaired,  who can do it in Cape town,

Thanks for the help all I will let you know what we find.

My bet is on the stator / source coil too. Won't be the three yellow wires as they are the charging coil wiring but the other ones (there usually are another four wires 2x source coil 2x trigger coil.

I can get source coil fixed for you.

Just remove the stator cover, you are bound to find burnt coils. Remove stator and send for reapirs.

Sorted it out today. Checked and found coils down to earth so fitted one of my spares to his bike. Now it's running purrrfectly. I must admit the symptoms had me fooled on the trip as at first it would just not idle but ran well at higher revs, then it would idle but cough and splutter at higher revs. Know for next time. :)

The stator seems to be a weak point on these bikes, eventually they do fail but crappy as it may be you can still get it home and get the part rewound. Glad it's sorted  :thumleft:

Thanks to Ken for sorting my bike out, it is now back to normal ;D he is the master.
douse any one have Krogs new number and address so that I can get the the stator to them for wiring ,  we can then put it into kenzogs spares bin for our future use.

thanks
