what on earth is all this talk of 40 and 50:1 when the manual asks for 32:1?

This is a two stroke, seen sunday at Piston Ring

As you probably realise Welsh that is not just "a two stroke" ... it is possibly THE 2 stroke!  A a lovely example. Certainly when I was 16 and racing Yammy FS1 50cc bikes this was my wet dream (or of course the 400  :D)
... and awesome sound when used in anger

Back in the late '70's we used to dose our 2T's with Castrol R40 (Castor bean based oil), leaves behind a nice smell for the guys trying to catch up - especially if they had the munchies

Ja I remember that - we literally used castor oil ... the synth these days has that smell anyway   I also had access to AVGAS that was a great high octane racing fuel... then there was the time that we were meant to use Methanol ...

We used to put a cap full per tank of gas in our XR500Rs just for the smell. Didn't matter who rode in front, you still got the smell. There's a two stroke oil available currently that gives off that smell.

10W40, 20W50, SAE30. Anything goes here. Change my strokers gear oil once per year, meanwhile just watch 2 things carefully; 1. the level[so you make sure it is not leaking out, and 2. that your gear oil is not turning a condensed milk colour[that will mean that the waterpump seal is letting coolant fluid into the gearbox cavity.
Apart from a kickstart idler gear on a PE175, I have never had problems with any Japanese bike gearbox. I of course know how to treat them. :mwink: You engage 1st gear, you do not "kick" at the gear lever with your trendy fat MX boot.
