Ghost in the 640 machine......???
« on: May 29, 2012, 04:21:36 pm »
Hi guys, I really need your help ?

I bought my 640 last year from our local KTM dealership. The day I collected the bike it wouldn't start due to a flat battery, I had it checked and found that it was knackered, so I replaced it with a new one.

I start the bike at least once a week and take it for a good ride, and it starts first time.

Problem is that sometimes when I stop on a ride it won't start again - sounds like a flat battery, so I have to kickstart it, which I really struggle to do with the kickstart located on the left.   :o Then I take it back up the road, switch it off, and try it again, and she'll start perfectly fine !!!!

Why does it do this, one moment she'll start perfectly fine, the next the battery is dead, dead ??   ???

I should also mention that it seems to do this when the bike is hot, hence the easy starting when she's cold....

A daft question... if you were to pull the deco-lever, will the bike than start...

This is girl explanation, but something about the piston being in the wrong spot for starting, so either put it in gear and slam back on the wheel, or pull the deco lever...

I have to do this every now and again... dunno if you are having the same thing though...

When you try starting it, does it just make a "click" sound as the a relay is closed and then does nothing else?

Sounds like compression lock in the motor... so the trick I mentioned will work if that is what it is...

But then, I am not a mechanical genius... just a girl that tries to use what little I do know...

BTW, I do the push back sitting on the bike, put it in gear and push back with both feet... just a quick sharp slam back, the bike may move a few centimetres only...

Watch out for that kicks start...broke my foot kicking mine in March...ouch! Battery was gone and hadn't gotten around to changing it...that'll learn ya! Best to kick while on the centre stand and be sure to give it a good hoof...
