Sorry for your loss!

:( Sad news , sorry to hear this.

I remember read a few years ago that 1100/1150 GS had a problem with the final drive, sometimes resulting in a fire. can't remember all the details of what the problem was, but I do have a pics of a 1150 stating to burn.

Hope the insurance sorts you out.

Bike could've fallen over when he tried to kill the fire, or when tyres burnt out, and the 'sudden deflation' pulled the bike over.

How can the bike end up on its right?

Tires and shocks blow from the heat and collapse. Side stand is still there, bike goes over the top, plonk!

One primary suspect IMHO: Electrical fault.
A fuel or oil leak should start a fire almost immediately after stopping. Same for some foreign cobbustible material caught around a hot exhaust or catalytic converter. A "fuse time" of five minutes would be very plausible if a chafed  wire shorted & started to smoulder.

I don't see any insurance problems the bike is very clearly a write off.

From the photos it looks like the bike burnt mostly standing upright?

Still a very sad sight :(

If they are aftermarket spots, take them off asap and delete photos.

I was thinking the same thing. Insurance would love to find a reason to not pay out. Any electrical device that is not BMW approved/fitted will be considered as a modification and therefore if not declared at the time of insuring the bike, will probably be the small print that gets them out of paying.

Good luck, I really hope this ends well

Thanks guys. The bike fell over when the suspension collapsed and the rear tire burst.

The bike is a 1997 1100GS.
What spots?

In the eyes of the insurance, yes, if the spots have not been wired up proffesionally (which you will have to prove) then they could have caused the fire, or any other non standard electrical accessory.

Im playing devils advocate here and hope for your sake that Im wrong, but my experience with insurance companies is that YOU get shafted (not a BMW pun  ). By not paying out, they make money and stay in business.

Ek dink jy sal OK wees.
