I have always used a nylon strap around the top box (and bracket).  It does a few things, gives me peace of mind that the topbox will not fall off.  If you go and rattle/shake most top boxes, they are loose and they get looser the more you ride. With all my 800 and 1200's (6 GSA's sofar)...
