    Smooth change without chain connected

Thanks @Jughead for the explanation and clarification. It was such a noticible difference that i was curious as to the cause. Makes sense(y)

    Show us your DR

Rear axle spacer damage & worn bearing hub

Yip, or serious neglect over many years. Probably a bit of both. Wicked Rides in Pretoria North can apparantly resleave the hubs, but they not open on Saturdays. Trying to make a plan to get it there at the moment.

Jy moet versigtig wees. Toe ek vrou eerste keer vat vra sy my na n paar dae of hierdie n vakansie of n survival course is. Ek het toe maar bietjie gerem en seker gemaak daar is genoeg vir haar ook. Daarom die voorstel om Swakop en Langstrand toe te gaan en rerig vakansie te gaan hou die eerste...

Rear axle spacer damage & worn bearing hub

Thanks @2StrokeDan - i have been reading up on that. I think the previous owner just tried the identations without also applying a retaining compound in support. I could see no signs of any residue and the bearing just dropped out. I see there are a few choices - Loctite 638/641or 660 might...

Rear axle spacer damage & worn bearing hub

Bearing diameter is, as far as my primitive calipher can tell, 47.05mm. Perhaps i can get a 47.1mm bearing. Will have to ask the bearing shop. Chances are slim though.

Rear axle spacer damage & worn bearing hub

Went and re-checked.The bearing just freely drops into the bearing hub on the disc side which has the (now confirmed deliberate) indentations....f@ck. Other side still has some resistance. What is worst that can happen if i refit the old bearings and ride it like that until i can find a...

Rear axle spacer damage & worn bearing hub

That makes a lot of sense. Dont know what the measurements should be but will ask Ms. Google. Probably will need to start looking for another rear wheel that is in better condition. Not something that is easy to find though.

    Smooth change without chain connected

With bike on the stand and rear wheel of the ground, selecting a gear is a bit crunchy. Take the chain and sprocket off the countershaft, however, and gear selections are as smooth as butter. Bit of a puzzler. Is the difference the load on the shaft (wheel, sprockets and chain) not being...

Rear axle spacer damage & worn bearing hub

Maybe best to get a new one that will seat square to the inner races of the bearings then. Old bike and hubs have probably suffered many bearing changes by the mechanically challenged as is evident from the strike marks. Probably lost some tightness too over the years, which is why the bearings...

Rear axle spacer damage & worn bearing hub

Rear wheel seemed a bit wobbly on the DR650 when on the stand and running in gear so i decided to change out the bearings as part of my fixing it up, and trying to locate the source of what i think is vibration originating somehere in the drive chain. Will also be fitting new sprockets and...

    Namibia Trip Advice.

Let me chip in too....because i have been a number of times some years ago. So just double check as things may have changed. 1. With the time you have, stay in the South and enjoy that first. 2. Get a Gondwana card. Used to be able to get better rates at some cool overnight spots with that...
