Sorry for a late response. I think its easy to over-engineer this fix. I used fine waterpaper to smooth the worst of the scratches on the valve covers and then sprayed with silver Sprayon engine enamel - 3 coats. Its holding up well and it closely matches the original colour. Live with the small...
