Yes it took little gentle nudging with hammer to slide the gear lever off the shaft. Cannot see cracks on the shaft but I had to bend the gear lever back into shape as it looked bit like a banana. I checked the gear selection and all seems fine so hopefully only the tip is bend.  :-\.
