Hentie,  sounds like you had the exact same experience I had when my chain broke. Not a nice feeling, and after reading a lot of horror stories about broken chains I think both of us came off very lightly. (You even more so than me. No damage.)

I've used the copper wire (stranded) method to fix things a few times. Works great!
