As I said Dan, Its never a guarantee, neither is a helmet, and lots of riders have been killed wearing those. This piece of equipment is hardly dubious, every rider in motocross, enduro and the Dakar rally wears one. The science is sound, the research is sound, and stacks of testimonials speak...

Thanks Hillman, Glad to hear that you also wear a brace! Agreed, nothing is guaranteed, but I reckon they would still prevent more serious injury if your neck actually is injured. Keep safe!
