    Biker Down N1 Malibongwe (Hanstrydom)

Colleague of mine rode past the accident earlier today just as the first ambulance was setting up. He said it looked like the bike had hit a pedestrian (who appeared to have died). Biker was being tended to by the paramedics.

    Lane splitting vs. emergency lane

Umm..  think you missed my point as it was shrouded by irony and you may have missed the smiley: I was poking fun at your statement that you can lane-split safely... I don't think you or anyone can. You might be able to lane-split safer than an inexperienced rider, but ultimately if the driver...

    Lane splitting vs. emergency lane

Quite right... I'd also like to add: "If you cannot ride safely on a 3m wide lane which carries virtually no other traffic while surrounded by a slow-moving procession of vehicles on your left and protected by a solid concrete barrier on your right, you are not competent enough to be riding on...

    Lane splitting vs. emergency lane

I've been riding the N1 between Beyers and Rivonia for many years and after much deliberation take the right-hand emergency lane. My reasons are thusly: * The emergency lane is almost as wide as a normal lane, giving plenty of space with excellent visibility. Because of the width, it's very...

Where to get rear fender fixed?

Hi, I've noticed a crack/fracture, maybe 8cm long,  on my Harley's rear fender. I've contacted HD and they told me that this is a common fault caused by vibration from the number-plate leading to stress fractures in the rear fender. For a cool R3000 they'll fix it for me (welding and respray)...

    Securing Topbox - How?

I'm not referring to the Givi mounting plate but the BMW adapter plate it is affixed to. It would literally take 1min to undo the 4 screws which hold the adapter plate to the bike.

    Securing Topbox - How?

So, got a Givi Topbox for my GSA the other day. It's fixed to a BMW adaptor plate that came with the bike when I bought it a few months back. Now, the plate is attached to the luggage rack with just 4 bolts. Nothing really stops anyone with a wrench from taking the plate (and thusly the Topbox)...

    N1 "bike lane" (Johannesburg)

Rode past that... not sure what happened. The News24 Traffic report said the accident was on the left-hand lane, but the bikes were parked on the right. One bike looked like it was on fire. The riders were standing around, so I don't think anyone got seriously hurt.

    N1 "bike lane" (Johannesburg)

I have no idea what the actual stats are, but (in my experience) the vast majority of bikers I see take the EL, so I would expect most accidents to happen there. As I've said in an earlier post: going at a reasonable speed (60-80) and paying careful attention to what the traffic is doing ahead...

    N1 "bike lane" (Johannesburg)

I travel from Westrand to Midrand every day on the N1 and have for many years. Most of the time I take the Emergency Lane when the traffic is at a stand-still (usually between Malibongwe and Rivonia). I've tried lane-splitting quite a few times but had way too many close shaves (cagers drifting...

    Fatal Vehicle Statistics...Per Vehicle Type!!

Most of the stats I've seen (EU or US-based) are pretty consistent: Per km traveled, you're around 30 times more likely to die riding a bike than driving a car. According to: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Micromort You have a 1:1'000'000 chance of having a fatal accident per 6 miles traveled by...
