We bought the exact same car for the kids to drive around. They are cheap and easy to maintain and I actually enjoy driving the little car from time to time; it is great fun on a twisty road and it reminds me of a Leyland Mini I used to have in the 80s. I can understand why women like them...

Interesting observation. I would agree with the older generation air cooled singles (XL, XR, XT and DR types). The modern water cooled singles (including the F650GS) will outlast their twin equivalents easily.

So you reckon PMB, Ixopo, Kokstad, Matat, Maclear, Ugie, Elliot, Queenstown, EL will work?

Is it still possible to get to East London from Pietermaritzburg through Mthatha or is this a bit risky (driving a normal sedan)? Alternative would then be through Eastern Freestate? Anyone that can advise the best/quickest route from PMB to EL?

If there is room for it, let her take it with. A few kilograms more or less on a 2-up trip makes no difference. Let her pre-pack before the trip in her allocated pannier space and then she can figure out herself what needs to stay behind if everything does not fit. A few extra kilopascals will...
