I have this exact same one. Bought it from Runner. Also carry 2x Masterlinks & short portion of DID chain in case chain needs to be shortened & mended.

    Photographic Equipment on Bike

@ Anton. I've just returned from a week shooting from the bike in Botswana/Zimbabwe. Carried all my equipment in A lowepro bag, changed lenses often. I'm not easy on equipment, jump off the bike, drop the Lowepro into the dust, zip it open, grab equipment & shoot ... so it goes all day long...

    Photographic Equipment on Bike

In a Lowepro bag on my back. Has to be best place from a shock & vibration perspective when riding offroad. Not ideal for quick access but I'm used to it, my equipment is worth more than my bike by a stretch. Also handy when you're not with your bike, just carry the backpack along. Pelican can...

    Op soek na die watermeid

Very interesting indeed and off course a great excuse to get out & about. Conjured up memories of cycling through Amalienstein during the Cape Epic a few years back. Mate and I are riding from CPT - Joberg end of Oct, offroad, following the Freedom Challenge route in reverse (where possible) -...

    Sigma 10-20mm vs Sigma 8-16mm for APS-C

I have the Canon 10-22. I shoot mostly mountain biking so it means action and landscape work. The 10-22/10-20/8-16 ranges are slow lenses, not know for being sharp and known for severe distortion on the edges. Pick anyone of the lot ... much of a muchness, they are all slow but for landscapes...

BMW F650GS Dakar '07 rear shock

I had both my Dakar front forks as well as the rear shock overhauled by Alex in Pretoria. Got them back as good as new.  Have just put them through a very rough ride through Botswana & Zim. Came through with flying colours! PM me for his details.

    Offroad Cycles - Thumbs Up

Feel we should punt good service when we get it - if it doesn't belong here, feel free to move it. Had my 2003 Dakar with Runner last Friday for some minor surgery (steering head bearing replacement, etc). They did what I asked so no kudos there ;). But then I noticed afterwards my chain had...

    Lesotho border posts

Two of us planning to do this section end October. Anyone done this before? On Google Earth it seems doable. Farm gates maybe?

Cape to Joberg Offroad - Any tips?

Thanks Ganjora. How about the section on the map, just as you go through the border post - shortcut through to Golden Gate basically? It looks fine on Google Earth but I've been tricked by that before.

Cape to Joberg Offroad - Any tips?

Also, will appreciate feedback as to the state of the road from Butha-Buthe through the valley to Monantsapass? Safety, road condition. We're planning to take this detour en-route from Sani to Clarens.

Cape to Joberg Offroad - Any tips?

Has anyone done this section of road? It's on the SA side as you cross through the Monantsapass Border Post from Lesotho side.

    Ponta Malomi

It can be done but it's sand jeep track all the way, some places thicker than others. The jeep track is reasonably compact due to the many cars doing it every day so rideable but very sandy. Many people do it with 4x2 vehicles but obviously not recommended, point is it's not deep sand all the...

Cape to Joberg Offroad - Any tips?

Two of us are planning a leisurely ride from Cape Town to Johannesburg end of October ober 7 days - 70% offroad, winding through all the passes along the Karoo/Klein-Karoo, hugging the foot of the Drakensberg and coming back through Lesotho. We're planning to stay over in...

    Swaziland Advice Required

Nisela Safaris S26 59.326 E31 56.546 About 40km North from Lavumisa. They have some nice Zulu huts you can stay in and serve a decent breakfast. Last time I drove from there to Mbabane there was nowhere else to stay in the Big Bend area.

    Tire sealent

We had a legend trip last year where I got 3 flats in 3 days. Used it all ... Amberseal, green slime, patches, CO2 bombs, aerosol tin cans, 12V compressor (blew the Dakar fuse btw), hand pump, spare tubes, etc. They all worked. What I missed most: Centrestand & tubless tyres What saved the day...

How do I get my bike through a deep river?

Thanks everyone for the great advice. It goes without saying that one would exhaust all possibilities before attempting a submerged crossing. Hope its not necessary - I'd hate to use tools and get my hands dirty  ;D
