    Can anyone identify this exhaust/silencer

Currently on a Yamaha XT600E (2005). I bought the bike with it on about 5 yrs ago. Can anyone ID the silencer/muffler? No markings on it. It's louder than stock muffler, with quite a deep sound, that's the only info I can offer. Thanks

    Thumper carb setup

This follows on from my yesterday "what carb" question. I'm doing a quick clean and rebuild of than Mikuni VM34-type carb, stock on early XT500 / TT500 / SR500's - just need some advice if anyone can help. On the left side of the carb there's that 'hot start' button and also the idle speed...

    Can anyone identify this carb?

Can anyone identify this carb model? It's running on an early 80's SR500 but I don't think it's the stock carb - I suspect it's off an old XT or TT500 maybe? Thanks

    XT500 / SR500

Early 1980's XT500 vs SR500 carburettors - anyone know the difference (if any) and would they be interchangeable? I heard somewhere that the SR500 came out with a Mikuni 34mm carb and the XT500 with a Mikuni 32mm but can't find accurate info. Thanks

Seems somebody had a lousy commute this evening... somewhere around CT? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q2kumRR26Kc

Can we stop saying OFF ROAD if we don't mean it?

I know I'm probably p*ssing in the wind trying to change this, but there's an illogical tradition in the bike community that drives me nuts. It's this: we keep on saying "off road" when we mean gravel road. It's stupid and misleading and it happens all the time. I'd guess that 90% of the time an...

    Self-repairing gearbox - what happened?

On the weekend I took the bike out - about an hour of fairly hard 3rd/4th gear riding on corrugated / potholed dirt roads, than about an hour of quite fast paved road, then an hour of dirt again, then another hour of paved. So the bike had a bit of a workout. As I came back into town at the end...

    Good dirt around George?

Question for George / Wilderness locals: From George, for a quick 2-3 hour ride... where are the closest interesting dirt roads? Anything from normal gravel to rougher plantation roads or even single track. Some climbs with a view would be nice - any unused but legal dirt roads up the mountains?

What to use to seal leaking exhaust joint?

Where my slip-on muffler meets the exhaust mid-pipe, it’s kind of a friction fit. Slightly smaller diameter pipe pushes into a slightly larger one. It’s a snug fit, but there’s a bit of exhaust leakage there. What can I use to seal that joint- some kind of exhaust sealant I guess? I could weld...

Exhaust question no. 2 - changing muffler

XT600, I'm thinking of changing current muffler. The exhaust I currently have, has these brackets welded to it. Rubber pads at the end, which the plastic side cover rests against. Shown in pic. Obviously this is to keep the side cover well away from the heat. Question is, do I need to get the...

Exhaust question no. 1 - what muffler is this

Got this on my bike, from previous owner and owner before him and maybe even before him. XT600. Anybody recognise it? Brand / name? Seems unmarked. Stainless, welded at the end of the can so can't be opened. Pipe section also welded on, goes all the way down to meet the header. Thanks.

    Rear tire width - can XT600E take a 140?

Anyone put 140 width knobblies on the back of an XT600E? (D606 / TKC80, those kind of tires). Quite a few reports online of 140's fitting ok on the XT, just wanted to make sure before I order. More common width seems to be a 120 or 130. Cheers

quick tyre opinion asseblief, I know it's braai time

Forgive the Friday night tire question, its a bad time I know. Hoping to put some shoes on a bike tomorrow and options are limited. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Lightweight bike (600cc) mostly for gravel roads and rougher 2-track, firebreaks, plantation roads etc. A bit of paved road...

Recommended bike workshops in S Cape?

Looking for local info, don't know the bike scene here very well... 1) what's a good place to get a v-strom serviced in mossel bay or George? 2) good place to get bike seat made up, mossel bay or George? Custom work, might need new pan etc. 3) A good old-skool thumper mechanic in George? Old...

Need suggestions for old-skool 500cc thumper exhaust

I've got a SR500 (basically XT500 motor in a road bike frame) and my current muffler is irritating me. It's very loud, even when idling. And it has a sharp, higher-pitched tone. Sounds almost like an open pipe. Or a race-ready CRF 450. Just too harsh, i.e. Not appropriate for a classic 30 year...

    Poor KLR

Some unkind soul has abandoned a nice green & black KLR in the back-of-Spar parking lot in Wilderness. Numberplate gone, flat back wheel, tail light lens kicked in, front fairing plastics gone, covered in weeks of sea grim and dust. Even a KLR deserves better... whose is it?

    Can anyone ID this exhaust

I have a Vstrom with an aftermarket muffler. Bought with it already fitted, just trying to find out what it is. Previous owner said he thinks it's Bassani, I have no idea. Anyone? edit - sorry I guess it helps to add a pic .

DIY pannier brackets - what steel tubing

I'm making up a set of DIY pannier brackets (hard alu boxes). Just wondering if anyone has any recommendations on what steel tubing to use (diameter / thickness). This will be for dirt roads so need something fairly strong. Was thinking of about 18mm diameter, 2mm thickness - sound right? What...

Anyone got pics of their 650 pannier brackets?

I need to make up a set of pannier brackets for a 650 strom - was wondering if anyone has some close-up pics? I need to see the shape of the bracket (left and right) and where it mounts/bolts on the bike. I have a set of hard panniers on the way but they are being supplied without the brackets...

Hard panniers - symmetrical or asymmetrical?

To anyone using hard cases with a one-side exhaust - do you use equal width panniers on both sides, which would make 1 pannier stick out more on the exhaust side? Or asymmetrical panniers, like a 31 L on one side and a 38L on the other side, which would make the width more or less equal on both...
