So just for the record... After looking at the prices I have decided to turn around at the Egyptian border and ride back down to Cape Town. The costs from the ferry into Egypt and getting ourselves and the bikes back to SA works out pretty much the same as turning around and riding back down...

I didn’t take into consideration that the GPS is only part of the expense. I would still need to buy maps, mountings, cables and whatever else. So I am going with the Etrex. Any suggestions on what maps to get for going up Africa, or is Tracks 4 Africa my only option?

No thanks- not right now anyway. I was seriously considering buying one (2 actually, for me and the wife). Still considering but not sure anymore- the price baffles me... I just want to find out why the big price difference in SA? I am hoping someone can shine some light on the subject.

Why is the Honda CRF 250l so expensive in South Africa? If you read any CRF250l review you will quickly read songs of praise for how affordable the bike is. It is much cheaper than any of its competition- including the Yamaha XT 250. One review even said that for the price of the XT you can buy...
