Thanks Lecap and Piet for voicing your doubts about the o ring being in the engine, and to RobC for the float chamber drainage suggestion. I never saw the o ring wedged into the oil intake hole before the trouble began, so I did jump to conclusions when assuming it snuck in. Must admit that...

Thanks Lecap. Hmmm, I was confused at the time because I don't remember seeing the o ring when replacing the oil cap to the engine. What led me to conclude that it snuck into the engine was the fact that the bike - for the first time ever - cut out immediately after starting. And then cut out...
