My old X-Country did this, the problem was the valve clearances. Started perfectly every time after I reshimmed those back to spec. When last did you check that? I havent dealt with a booster plug so cant comment on that.

The takealot ones fit nicely but are not as good quality. I had branded Grip Puppies on a previous bike and they didnt deteriorate at all in 6 months of use. New bike, fitted the takealot ones about 3 months ago and they're compressed where they get the most pressure.
