The X dash triggers the low fuel lamp when the thermistor resistance reduces to about 230 ohms, there is approx 1 minute delay before the lamp comes on the dash then latches the lamp on until the ignition is turned off
Tests show the switch arrangement from the 650GS can be used instead with a...
One of the US owners has found the assembly plastics are from he E36 cars & you move the 650GS parts onto it

Nambo learns fast, and sticks to the task, pleased he has the machine back up and running
Re the grey Diode Relay pic's posted here the tracks highlighted are not used, that is simply the poor manufacture
Nambo's problem made me go back and look again at the wiring diagrams, on both single and...
Amused to see my BMS and Dash wiring diagram go from dubious to being considered correct
I can also see that Jughead is living up to reputation with the brilliant work on the Dash pcb
There is one aspect of the fuel lamp operation though that no one seems to have picked up on and which...
Further information for anyone considering conversion
The GS caliper is definitely the same brembo part no as the 950 KTM
The KTM caliper hanger works on both 4860 & these 4357 WP Forks
There are both 22 and 28 mm handlebar mounts available from KTM.. at a price
The slightly later 02 KTM SX...
Re battery
On the GS particularly in hot climates and low speed situations like bush tracks or city traffic the voltage regulator overheats and feeds the battery up to 16.5v & overcharges it. The inner cells will normally need more water than the outer cells.
I found it here in Oz and worked...
As of 15/6/09 UK VOSA safety Authority has announced an investigation into the fork issues on the early F650GS
They have promised a full investigation
Will post further information as it becomes available
An enterprisiing US F650GS owner Ralph Wolfe has managed to force the NHTSA to open a formal investigation into the fork failures and BMW has now been asked to "please explain"
The documents associated with the investigation including the information request to BMW are available at their web...
We may be jumping the gun here, looks like a new style fork leg & there are no known failures in the new style sliders
The pic is intriguing though and I would have a dealer check it just to be on the safe side
Having taken the fall myself and knowing what I do now, much of it not public, I would not be riding the machine with hairline cracks in the fork leg around the axle mount
Will be interested to see the photo's
Since my post above re advrider another report has come in from the UK of a write off a couple of years back, seems he laid it down in the dirt & fork failure was the result.
OK, here is the link for the diagnostics plug pin out

And the pages with BMS info

Now, what does it take to get a copy of the software you are referring to ?
Thanks for the post, nice work on circuit board repair
I have had mine apart before & there were no chaff marks on the circuit board, I had 30-40k kms on it when it was apart, dont reacll anything which could have caused chaff marks like that
One thing I did notice with mine was water could go...
I fitted a Staintune pipe to mine, not sure if they export to SA
While I normally prefer a quiet pipe the Staintune makes enough noise to make sure even 4 wheel drive owners are aware of my presence without being too obtrusive
Even a non motoring mate commented it makes a nice sound
Bakkie
A silly question but while your orange beast is taking a rest could you take a measurement off it for me.
I would like to know the length of the front forks from top of steering head to centre of axle
Would appreciate it if you could measure it
Sorry to see the damage there Michnus, not the first time BMW has had alloy problems on the GS models.
The alloy near the front of the swing arms was also known to break & in Oz they did a recall on them for replacement
Too many things like this go unreported & BMW then is able to say never...
The electronic flashers designed for LED will normally handle using conventional globes, I ran my Dakar with LED front indicators (mounted in the hand guards) & globes in the rear for quite some time before I ran up circuit boards to put LED's in the BMW rear indicator housings
For those with...
Fitting resistors is insane, the alternator output is low enough already without wasting power.
With LED indicators & non CAN BUS simply swap out the indicator relay with one designed for LED's
They are available in 2 and 3 pin versions from automotive accessory shops
I fitted a canadian one...
Beyond the obvious faults like sensors, firmware, injectors etc
My 02 Dakar was not crash hot at low RPM and in extreme heat could stall when backed off quickly. It also developed a miss/hesitation in wet weather.
I found the horrible metal shroud BMW plug cap partly to blame. Removed the...
