Am fitting a new speedo cable to the bike. Should it be lubed in anyway before fitting or not?

Anybody got a plastic nose section for AT new shape lying around? AT's mounting bracket broke on the last trip and all the shaking slowly cracked the bikes plastic nose section to buggery. Will try and have it plastic welded but will be happy if I can replace it.
