I can recommend staying over at Elephant Sands, https://www.elephantsands.com, before you start, then stay over in Kasane again.  I think you can do it in one long day.

Did hunters road in 4x4 in September last year.  Only did section between Pandamatenga and Kasane.  Most of the road was good gravel, with some serious sand in places.  This section, 100km, we did in a morning. I believe conditions can get hairy further south and especially in the rain season...

Been riding it almost every weekday for a couple of years.  Never had any issues.

I would seriously reconsider.  Been there, done it.  He'll of expensive to maintain and unreliable. Bought mine with 13000 km on the clock.  Had two major breakdowns by the time I reached 30000 km.  Coolant in oil a major issue, see other threads here. Awesome bike though. If I had a support...

Had mine fitted.  Still worried that it would again come off on heavy dirt.  I am planning to build two additional supports to prop up the canter lever.

Noticed an instability at low speed, in bumper to bumper traffic.  Started to check around and found this bolt on the steering loose to the extend that I could remove it by hand ??? I presume this thing should be torqued to a specific standard? How is it possible that this can just come loose?

Have received the bolts.  Still have to fit it.

So I have a friend who has been riding as a passenger with me who are now keen on learning to ride. Does anybody know of a place near JHB where one can rent say a 250 and ride it for a few hours on a track, no licence at this time, to get the experience.

Did the trip via Thaba-Tseka in 10 hours, December 2011.  Hard riding and it was not winter weather.  Watch your fuel range, I filled up in Thaba-Tseka and had sufficient to get to civilisation.  There were no fuel up at the dam at the time and other bikers on plastics had a problem.

You can make it a round trip in a day, including lunch at the dam.  But note the weather can get nasty!

Average is about 15 km/L. Typically I get about 300km on a tank, then I am in reserve, this is commuting and weekend riding.  Then I fill it up with about 20L. On trips if I cruise around 140 it goes to 16 / 17.  If you push it to the 170 mark definitely down to about 14. This brings me to...
