48,000km Transalp service - best oil? Extras to check?

I want my baby to last and I know oil can make a big difference. The manual recommends SAE 10W-30. Switch to synthetic? Different viscosity?

Also, the engine will likely be dropped to play with valve clearances. Anything else to check while we're in there?
