New emission standards for 2024 – Here we go again.

For 2024, the EURO5 emission standard for road registered motorcycles is replaced by the EURO5+.

There is not a lot of information about the new standard and how it will affect the motorcycle
business, so I believe it is worth discussing this topic again this year.

It is very difficult and expensive for the motorcycle manufacturers to develop motorcycles that will
meet the demands in the European EURO emission standards, because they are the hardest standard
to meet. But the American EPA and other standards around the world are close behind, so most
motorcycle factories are now building “World models” because it is way too expensive to develop
different bike variants for different markets.

10 years ago, there was still a fair number of “country specific” bike models, but today, you can be
reasonably sure that any new road legal bike that is sold in non-European countries, will be the same
bike that is sold in Europe and is meeting the current EURO standard.

So the vast majority of all new bikes above 250cc that are
sold world wide are meeting the new EURO emission
regulations, and that is why the EURO standard is
important in the world wide motorcycle business.

New cars are already running under the EURO6
regulation and EURO7 is enforced from 2025, so even
though EURO6 have not yet been scheduled for
motorcycles, we can be pretty sure that it will be
introduced within a few years time.
