Motorcycling through Africa
Soon after doing my 1st dusi canoe marathon at 16, I broke my legs in
3 different places. Over the next 7 years, my legs broke 2 times
further not allowing me to run or play rugby for a decade.
Since then, I have used my recovery to rehabilitate and live life
fully.
I’ve been the head physiotherapist for Tonga at the rugby world cup
in Wales, together with Orlando pirates and Chelsea football clubs. I
now run a series of physiotherapy clinics.
Since recovering I’ve managed to run 4 comrades and 2 oceans
marathons, run a 100 miler in the Himalayas, cycle the length and
breadth of Europe and play club rugby in Europe and South Africa.
The highlight of my time so far is definitely my solo motorbike Cape
to Cairo expedition in 2010.
I’m now combining my passion for exercise and health to do a PhD in
community medicine.
Richard Feher has realised a boyhood dream by completing his bike
journey from Cape Town to Cairo. Richard's journey began back on 1
September at the offices of the Chris Burger Petro Jackson Fund in
Newlands, Cape Town, and finished when he crossed the Nile into Cairo
on 12 November.
Here is his final entry, posted on 12 November:"At 13h30 I crossed
he Nile arriving in Cairo.
"It’s been my boyhood dream to cross the African continent on a
motorcycle since almost losing my life on one 20 years ago. That
accident kept me out of reach of some goals.
"Over the past three months I have crossed rivers, climbed Africa’s
highest peak, dived with whale sharks, been charged at by near-extinct
gorillas, was shot at, spent nights in jail, pulled worms out of my
abdomen, taught maths, built toilets, started roadside medical
clinics, watched sunsets and sunrises, drank blood and most of all
achieved, lived and breathed every moment there was available.
Please join us after the talk for dinner at the country club. There
will be a set menu of 3 dishes to choose from./
