Oukloof Pass / Oudekloof Pass
Northern Cape (Leeu Gamka - Fraserburg)
S32 10 47.6 E21 47 02.5
Skill level: easy / intermediate (depends on the condition of the road surface.)
Road Condition: Gravel Surface
Remarks: Average speed recommended. Watch out for water damage to road surface. A few smaller water crossings.
" Google Earth Location
"Mapsource Location"
Oukloof is a great road to take. When we passed there the karoo apparently saw rain that only falls once every ten years. The road was closed to normal traffic so we saw no other vehicles but the road surface was at places completely washed away and this made the trip a little more technical however not imposible even for less seasoned riders.
According to https://www.patourism.co.za the pass was completed in the late 1880s a few years after diamonds were discoverd in Kimberley.
Some photos I took there: (apologies for the bad quality)
Oukloof is straight ahead from this photo, as can be seen on the side of the sign.
