Biker gets cops’ knickers in a knot

Ekurhuleni metro police thought they’d seen it all - until they pulled over a biker who had used a pair of woman’s panties to obscure his number plate.

The Ekurhuleni metropolitan police department nabbed the 48-year-old man riding a Triumph motorcycle on Tuesday morning after a high-speed chase along the N17 highway.

Chief Superintendent Wilfred Kgasago said police had tried to pull the bike over as it turned on to the N17 at the Rondebult Road on-ramp.

The driver, who was carrying a female passenger, sped off, precipitating the chase along the west-bound freeway. An SAPS helicopter was called in to stop the bike after ground units could not keep up with the suspect, who was travelling at about 200km/h.

“The helicopter flew very low and gave instructions to stop over its PA.”

Kgasago said the suspect had then realised he could not escape the helicopter and pulled over at the exit near Rand Airport.

Kgasago said the man had claimed he was speeding because he was late for an appointment.

The panties were used to cover the number plate to avoid being caught by speed cameras.

The rider was expected to appear in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court today, charged with defeating the ends of justice.

He will avoid a charge of reckless and negligent driving because the officers did not have a speed-measuring device with them. - The Star
