BMW R1200GS
Hi,

I am planning a trip from Port Elizabeth to Vic Falls and surrounding areas. This will be my first time crossing borders by motorcycle and would appreciate any comments or advice. It will also be the longest ride we have planned. I will be traveling with my father who is 70. We are both riding R1200GS LC. The intention is to keep to tar where possible. Gravel will be fine; sand will be a problem.

The plan is to leave early May. The provisionally planned route is as follows:
Day1: PE – Kimberly
Day2: Gaberone
Day3: Francistown
Day4: Kasane
Day5: Vic Falls
Day6: Vic Falls
Day7: Divundu
Day8: Maun
Day9: Serowe
Day10: Pretoria
Day11: Colesburg
Day12: PE

Following are my questions / concerns:
1. Does the route seem manageable comfortably (road conditions, distances)?
2. How much time should we allow for border crossings?
3. I have seen that cars need ZA stickers, triangles among other things. Is this also relevant for motorcycles?
4. Are there are areas on the plan where we are likely to have issues with very rough gravel or sand?
5. How are the road conditions in these regions in general? What average speed could we expect to achieve?
6. Will we need to carry additional fuel?
7. Any specific tools / equipment / parts apart from basic toolkit, compressor?
8      Is this a good time of the year?

any other advice or comments will be appreciated.
