The busiest of the â??Four passesâ?, this route was also used by wild animals initially. Herds of migrating game crossed the Hottentots Holland mountains using this route. San hunters and Khoikhoi pastoralists called this the Gandoupas â?? (Pass of the Eland).
With the settlement of the area the first Europeans used this route east to what was know as the Overberg. The Governor, Sir Lowry Cole allowed the pass to be built, which opened in 1830. The summit is at 402m affords panoramic views of the False bay coastline.
