With the Zero X motocross and Zero S supermoto electric models well under way, it was only a matter of time before Zero Motorcycles launched a dual-purpose model.

The Zero DS (as in Dual Sport) shares much of the S’s genes, including its frame and battery, but gets longer suspension travel, gearing aimed at rapid acceleration, a round headlight and knobbly tyres. The downside of the new gearing is a slightly slower top speed (88.5km/h compared to 96.5km/h on the S) and a shorter range of 80km compared to 96.5km.

According to Zero Motorcycles the Zero DS “can be ridden anywhere from the city street, to a gravel road, to a dirt trail”. The DS is “designed for motorcyclists who want the freedom to ride wherever they want” added Gene Banman, CEO of Zero Motorcycles.

To soak up the extra bumps of cutting through the veld, suspension travel on the front fork is now 25cm (up from 20cm) and the front wheel has been uprated from 16-inch to 17-inch, but travel on the rear shock remains unchanged.

Unlike some of its competition, the Zero DS is designed from the ground up to be an electric motorcycle. Aircraft grade aluminum is exclusively used in the construction of the lightweight twin spar frame. Each component on the motorcycle is engineered to minimize weight and the power pack is designed for maximum energy density. As a result the motorcycle is quicker, has greater range and is more agile.

To keep green riders happy, the Zero DS is not only a zero emissions vehicle, but is completely non-toxic and almost 100 percent recyclable. In addition to the motorcycle’s efficient energy usage, the power pack consists of lithium-ion cells that are clean enough to be landfill approved.

The Zero DS is available for purchase exclusively through the Zero Motorcycles’ website and is priced at $9 950 (R81 000).
