For those of you not familiar with the Eastern Cape, do yourself a favour and plan a ride to Hogsback. It's another world altogether up on the mountain. Besides the magnificently forested area one gets to ride through, there is a mystique about the place, most of which is jealously guarded and maintained to ensure that the Hogsback magic is retained. We did a lot of research on the village which makes for fascinating reading. One of the moot points is that J.R.R. Tolkien's world famous 'Lord of the Rings' story is reputed to have been inspired by the forests around Hogsback.

Tolkien was in fact born in Bloemfontein, but left for England with his parents when he was only 3 years old, never to return to SA, which sort of kills that theory. Anyway, the legends live on in misty Hogsback and the possible presence of goblins, fairies, ghosts and hobbits irresistably  continues to draw visitors to the area. And that folks, is called tourism in its finest form!

The pass itself is nicely designed but is starting to show signs of age and the barrier lines on the pass have all but disappeared, which makes overtaking an interesting exercise. Book into one of many fine lodgings and spend a day or two in this beautiful part of South Africa. You'll not be sorry.

Oh yes, if you enjoy trout fishing, this is a great destination.
