As political agitation, violent strikes and protest, continue to escalate in frequency and intensity, civilians calls for help to protect life and property are not always heeded.
Specialist units from the SAPS are not always available nor are they always properly trained or led due to political interference, poor training or lack of equipment. This is not to insult the SAPS, simply stating a reality that civilians face in South Africa, either stuck in their home, business’s, traffic or a mall.
The Thunder pepper grenade emits a sound of about 100dB. For comparison a gunshot is about 120dB.
The mechanism is extremely reliable as nothing is held in tension whilst it is stored. The mechanism can be re-used about 90 times. The “Skin” or body is single use.
It disperses powder in about a 1.5-3 meter radius depending on wind conditions and height above ground when it bursts.
It is a non-lethal, non-pyrotechnic device that cannot remotely be compared to a MilSpec thunder flash or stun grenade, which can easily result in horrific injuries or death and lots of legal paper work.
The advantage is that correctly thrown into or at a mob will cause panic from the noise as well as causing irritation from the pepper powder with a very low probability.
Used in conjunction with Pepper Ball Launchers the Thunder Pepper Grenade is a useful tool in dealing with Mobs.
Used incorrectly in an enclosed space it can result in a stampede or asphyxiation.
