Thats also possible, it seems likely that oil flow is the biggest problem due to wear on all the components, not only the cams. KTM builds reliable 4 stroke racing engines for MX and enduro as well as the V twin bikes, dont know how they messed this design up so badly

Such BS from KTM, how is it your problem if the cam wears to the point that the shim falls out. That is a lot of wear to do that. Was keen on the 901 but will not touch one with these issues

loading corner to corner on Ranger super cab just fits an offroad bike with gate closed , unless the Hilux is a lot longer i doubt you will be able to close the tail gate with a 690

There is no way an aftermarket filter can wear a cam shaft, you can get cylinder, piston, rings and valve wear if dirt gets in past the air filter. As mentioned its the cam itself being too soft or not enough oil lubrication.
