A day in the workshop ...

Thanks Chopperpilot! Well, yes and no. Yes, I have discussed it at length with the client and he has agreed that I do it. I, however, pushed for it to be done so, while he will be covering the material costs, the vast majority of the labour will be for my own expense, basically because I am...

Thanks OomD. I am going to put an aluminum plate on but not quite sure whether I'm going to make a hole in it or not. Will see when I get there.

I was thinking of forwarding him some before and after photos, @ClimbingTurtle . However, I realised that I would probably be told that I have compromised some highly specialised, highly critical design feature and in turn the strength of the frame. Decided just to give it a miss.

So. first off I took my new chamfer tool for a test drive. I must say, I am happy. You have a choice of straight chamfer or rounded. I chose straight for this exercise. Then it came to tacking the new brackets on, which presented a new dilemma. Try as I might, I could not get the new...

    Wanted Early (04 - 06) BMW R1200GS Instrument Cluster

Thanks @EtienneBnk Have tried that route already. These displays appear to be rather hard to come by. The later versions are a dime a dozen, available everywhere and not that expensive. ACME does have one in stock, but they are not willing to sell it. Go figure. When I pushed them about...

Honestly, probably one of the easiest to learn. Not as fast as MIG, but far more versatile.

I added some tubes in as reference for the original holes/tabs. These will all be cut away in the final steps. Then I cut away all the offending bits New tube cut to size, notched and ready to be welded. First root pass. I will do all the final welding when the brace bracketry has been...

A day in the workshop ...

Decided to tackle this first thing this morning. First turned up a bending mandrel from a chunk of cast iron. I had forgotten what a bitch it is to turn this stuff. Not so much the turning, but the mess it makes. Then into the press on some strategically placed odds and ends. Attempt 1...

This is my template for the new pipe ... which will fit in like so: I will then most likely lose the front end, and have proper lasercut brackets to fit like so:

IMO Chris, this cradle is seriously overengineered. The frame is only as strong as the weakest point, and of those there are plenty. It needs a serious revamp, so will be doing it all at the same time. Take a look at these angles. Try and find 2 that are the same.
