40km one way gives you 80 plus the farm visits add up to 100km+ per day. For that you need a little bit of comfort as well. The Suz is excellent but no wind protection and a very hard seat....I would rather opt for the XT66R if money is not a problem, otherwise the KLR. The new KLR's have no issues - doo sorted, bad machining of barrel sorted so no oil burning and worries
have you owned a klr & ?
the seat is not much better, in fact i prefer the seating on the DR to the KLR.
what about the KLR's subframe???
it's pathetic suspension in comparison to the DR (both stock are, hmmm, well, not good)
every nut and bolt on the DR is of better quality,
just about everything is a better design.
having owned a KLR for 75000km and a DR for 47000km,
i feel qualified to say: the KLR is the more spoken about,
and the DR is the better (out the box)...
I trained him well

Also would advise on DR as first choice.
Needs very little mods or add ons for the intended job.
The DR mill easily exceeds 100,000km without requiring major work. (Mrs. LeCap's currently approaches 110,000km and does not use significant amounts of oil between services.
It is very cheap to maintain.
A 40 km commute should not take you more than three quarters of an hour. Less if it's open road with not much traffic. A comfortable seat is not a requirement at all. You can sit on an SA pine plank for that amount of time. Unless you want to speed on tar roads & freeways you won't need no windscreen either.
I'm not a big fan of the XR650L if compared to the DR650SE.
The Suzuki has the (slightly) more advanced and definitely longer lasting engine, it's less of a handful if you're "less than tall" thanks to its lower seat and it even has further build in lowering potential (without castrating the bike by fitting footlong suspension links) and it's fitted with a state of the art front brake.
The OEM tank of the XR is even smaller than the DR's and the Honda is rather thirsty.
The only real world advantage of the KLR over the DR is the Kawasaki can take an adult passenger.
My sentiment towards the Yamaha 660's hasn't changed: IMHO they are 15kg too heavy & R15,000 too expensive. You may call that value for money
