I need 690 advice
« on: January 08, 2013, 11:02:55 am »
I am going to get a 690R.

Now I don't quit know which 'model' to get.

I was thinking of getting a second hand one, but would only want a 2012 if it is.

Then thought about the option of new, which isn't too much more than 2nd hand at the moment, and I get an extra year of warranty.

What I want to use the bike for?? Well, I want to get into off road racing and I want to adventure ride too. But cannot afford a tricked out 450 and a 990 right now. So 690 sounded like the best bet to get the best of both worlds.

Do I get a kit, the one from KTM CT which is a new 2013, get a 2013 690 then add my own kit (OMEGA?? Rallye Raid??)

Advice please, as I need to get one soon!

Honda XRV750 Africa Twin (1999). KTM 990 ADV. R (2010). All gone. Now have.. Vespa 125 Super '67.  KTM 690 (Oryx RS kit to come)

Personally I would go with the new bike and finance it over 3 years. Haggle a bit with the dealer and you can get some farkles thrown in for free. I bought mine in 2009 and finished paying her off last year, the price included a TT bashplate, the touring screen, the 1000 click and 5000 click services included free except for consumables. The bikes are either fantastic or lemons that need some work - My mate bought one at the same time and it was in and out of KTM several times until they got the mapping sorted, so having the warranty makes sense. Also if you buy it new you can break the motor in yourself so you know exactly how it has been treated, unlike a newish 2nd hand one. The price difference isn't huge but it buys a lot of extra peace-of-mind.
I don't like morning people... in fact I don't like mornings, or people!

My advice - it's not a 990 or a 450, so if you want either dont buy the 690.

Hey Robski, get the Rally Raid Kit, a lot cheaper than the KTM CT Oryx R kit and well tried and tested, I have had MAJOR problems on my bike, really irritating, I spent more time doing Loctite than riding - fixed now though, and made some nice mods, will post later on. I also think the Rallye Raid machine has similar range with less weight, as I cannot use the full capacity of the tank because of the FI / pump setup. The 690 is an awesome bike off road. I did 1300 km on tar during December in one day. It hurt like a mfckr, but what do you do when someone reverses over your trailer..... Mine cant go faster than 126 Km/h due to severe head-shake. And it is dangerous. Suspension issue with new fairing/ tank setup apparently, really painful.. and irritating.  Get the Rally Raid kit, and have it fitted by Off Road Cycles in Pretoria. Sure they will ship it at minimum cost.  You dont want to wonder why the hell they tied a cable to the bash plate after it vibrated loose 100 times but never bothered to put a friggin nylock nut on....

Whats the easiest way to get the rally raid here? Are there places in SA that bring them in or you recommend just ordering online?
