CRF450X DIY Modifications
« on: April 29, 2013, 02:43:47 pm »
Ok, so i decided to fiddle with my CRF a little more as per the Thumpertalk posts.

The exhaust muffler was already cut when i got the bike, and the spark arrestor removed. Issue is that this makes the bike run lean. So i changed the jets last week, and cut the entire top off the airbox. The bike now seriously hops, was at Wild West on Saturday, and the front starts lifting nicely with a bit of throttle in most gears.

This morning i did the accelerator pump mod (not needed from 08 models up). Took me about 2 hours, so not a big mission. Will report back on Thursday about the improvement.

Another DIY just finished.

My electric start wasn't grafting 90% of the time, and then gave up altogether. After some research, it turned out to be the starter gear slipping. I took off the right side crankcase cover, removed the gear, and saw that the two gears slipped both ways. Had a mate weld it up, refitted, and now it works first push.

Post pics of your own one next week...

I only took a pic of the right side open, should have taken more but didn't bother.

Just a note, the double gear on the electric start is supposed to turn together when starting, but is able to spin backwards independently as a fail point. This stupid design often results in the gear farking out and spinning both ways. A new gear from Honda is R1090. As long as you don't hang on the starter the welding option will work.

Goddam thing only left the states yesterday, so who knows when it'll arrive. You want to borrow the harness to replicate?
