Yami and BergHaan on their Tax tour
« on: August 14, 2014, 12:55:41 pm »
Ok, so here is a but of a ride report of a different kind.
We did it in cages as ;)

Both myself and BergHaan work abroad, so each year we have to do a tax tour. (63 days consecutive out of SA) We work 6 and 6, so we need to do an extra 3 weeks. Where we decide to do a 3 week holiday trip.

Worth-It (my wife) drove up to PTA to meet BergHaans wife, where they met up with us in Gabs at about 9am in the morning.
From Gabs we drove up towards the A2 and parallel to the Central Kalahari. There is a 2 spoor off-road that goes towards the Fence and then runs parallel with the fence north.
We camped next to the fence that night. It was quite cold that evening, thought that we might have chosen the wrong time of year as all the other trips we have done over the Jun/Jul school holidays. This year we where not so lucky as our schedule did not match the school holidays and meant we had to do it a month later and the temperature seemed much colder. The next morning the temp was 3deg :o
Made a quick cuppa moer coffe and packed up and headed north along the 2spoor.
We were lucky to see a leopard crossing the road, did not have time for the camera.
The rest of the trip was exciting and adventures with a lot of thick sad.
We kept going north, until we where at the end of the reserve and headed towards the A3 tar road and Kang. Turned north west towards the Etsa 13 where we turned off to Guma Lagoon.

We spent 5 nights there. Awesome fishing. BergHaan made sure he put the marker high, last trip our family caught the most fish. So this time he made sure, he got us back. He even managed to land a 3.7Kg Tiger.
Guma Lagoon is a must to stay when you head to Botswana.

After our 5night stay in Guma, we left north to Namibia and turned west towards Khadum park.
There we pulled off as we got of the tar road. Deflated tires to 1.8Bar. Took us about 3 hours to the northern camp sights Khadum.
They are busy revamping this camp sight with nice thatched bungalows. I think its gonne be a great park soon with the new management and NWT.
We stayed one night in the top and the next night at the bottom of the park. Saw a lot a wild life. Just not lions, which we heard they killed a wille bees the night before. But we where very lucky to see a leopard. She had cubs with her and kept on making sure they where well hidden.
From Khadum we went out south and try to go to the place where the “Hol boom” where. Unfortunately there was too much water to cross. And we did not know the depth of it, as it stretched for kilometers. And this was on a 2 spoor road.

Our plans where initially to head to Brandberg from Khadum, but as we did not see any lions, the ladies asked if we could go to Etosha. So after the long search for the Holl boom, and doing some off-roading, we hit the gravel and tar and headed to Etosha. It was quite a distance, but we managed to get to a camp sight, just outside the Gate.
The next morning we went in early and asked for 2 nights in Etosha, managed to get place at Halali. The hole day traveling and looking for the "old mighty one". The King of the Jungle. But nothing!
Lots of wild, must say....a bit too much like a zoo. The Springbok and Zebra just look at you as you pass them on the gravel roads.
At night we sat at the waterhole, waiting for Mister. Played with my canon. Shooting starts and anything that moved, except the Lion.
The last night at the water hole, we saw the King. But :dousing: My canon did not manage to shoot the bugger. (maybe next time)

So after doing Etosha and the boring gravel roads in the park. We headed towards BrandBerg :thumleft:
This is where we had something as a surprise for the ladies :peepwall:
As we headed southwest towards the mountain, I was checking my GPS out and saw a nice 2spoor path from Khorixas and down to Brandberg. This was a nice ride, between the long grass and over dunes. Great view.
Went pass the Vinger klip and did a bit of exploring off the road as well.

We stayed at Brandberg for 3nights.
Just relaxed and enjoyed the atmosphere. Repacked the bakkies and made sure everything was secure for our next adventure.....down the Ugab river.
We checked the track on the GPS as well as info what we acquired.

As we headed down the Ugab, about an half-hours drive, we managed to see the elephants.
The ride was in some places a bit ruff and technical. We had to divert from 3 swamps in the total ride down to the mouth.
The last swamp that I went in first, was a bit of a scare.
Went around a sharp corner and the nose sunk away to the right. I think the water was up to the headlight. But as that happened. I was already in reverse and out. BergHaan took it on his GoPro. A total of 1.5 min in and out ;D
The rest of the trip was awesome with great views.
We overnighted at Rhino camp. Also a nice place to camp.
Basic....Donkey for hot water and fire bucket as a shower. Long-drop for toilets.

We arrived at the coast with the fog blanket awaiting. Which is a normal sight for Namibia.
From there we headed to Cape-cross seals and then Hentiesbay.
From Henties, we drove all the way along the beach towards Swakopmund.

In Swakop we stayed at Alte Brucke. Quite camp sight almost at the Swakopriver mount.
We had a lovely stay there. Just that two other campers where not so lucky. They locked all their belongings (Passports and cameras and Vehicle papers) inside their Bakkies. They where broken into and stolen. We where lucky as we where right behind them.

We drove up the Swakop river towards the mining area. Passed through one of their NO entry boards towards the Welwitshia plains. From there we went to Bludkoppies.
Enjoyed the Lighthouse menu. And relaxed in my old “home” town.
We spent a morning at Walvisbay Lagoon and tried to go to Pelikanpoint, but the mist was to thick.

The afternoon we played in the dunes. We even managed to both get stuck and that after about 5000km of doing off roading :imaposer:

After the 5nights in Swakopmund we left via Walvisbay through the Komashoogland towards Sossusvlei.
We managed to get a camping spot in Sossus as this place, this time of year is normally fully booked with foreigners.
Took the loooong slow drive towards to dunes.

From Luderitz we headed for Rospina for a Whimpy Brunch. And down to Aqua River camp sight. This is a great camp sight!
We overnighted there as I could only stamp my passport on the Friday.....my tax tour done.
We relaxed next to the river and chatted about our great 3 weeks.
A GREAT ADVENTURE! Awesome rides and views.
Next trip....gonna be on two wheels. The wife (Worth-It) has already agreed on it :thumleft:
