Help needed - Crocodiles or Tiger fish?
« on: September 08, 2014, 06:43:57 pm »
Hi guys.
We are going to a place called Ratho Bush camp in two weeks time. I plan on taking the fishing gear along, but I would like to know beforehand if there are crocodiles in the area.
I also plan to do some tiger fishing, but obviously I need to know if there are tigers in the area.
I'm attaching a map of the area with Ratho's position, would appreciate any information you can give me.
Thanks

I dunno if there will even be water in the Motloutse river at this time of year?

The Shashe and the Limpopo are teeming with crocs, so if there is water the chances are that there will be lots of crocs.

But I've fished the Limpopo in that vicinity lots, and I just make sure that I keep a very close eye on the water, and try to fish from a high embankment, or stay at least 3 meters from the edge of the water.

Tiger fish? No mate, the first river you get tigers in is the Zambezi, and then also in Jozini dam. You will get tilapia, barbel, and maybe even some perch. But no tigers. Sorry mate, never heard of tigers in that area.

Thanks Mr Zog, valuable information!
I'll be trying for tilapia then, haven't caught a decent one in ages and they taste good.

Tigers also in Komati river and Crocodile river below the gorge after Nelspruit towards Komatipoort.
If in doubt, flat out.

So, back from my holiday, and a bit of feedback is in order.

There was a bit of water flowing in the Limpopo, although only a trickle. The place we were at was overrun with elephant and all kinds of other game. In the pool we decided to fish in, the crocs were a constant worry, and the ellies were never far away. I caught my first barble with my second cast, and with the fish struggling in the water the crocs were immediately on hand to see what injured animal was doing all the splashing. They kept their distance though, so no harm done, we just kept two meters away from the water.

We fished with chicken livers, and I soon noticed that I had a problem with my fishing line. Apparently the line was old, because it kept on breaking, and the hook kept on going missing. It wasn't until the next day that Trevor, our Zimbo friend, told me it was because I was fishing without a trace, and my line was being broken by tiger fish.
Fook!
I immediately tied on a trace and tried catching a tiger, but never got it right.  That's OK though, I plan on going back next winter, and this time I'm going with the express mission of landing my first tiger.

Or African Pike...

Very often wrongly accused of being a Tiger because of its impressive chompers. Have a google, IIRC Botswana even had one on a postage stamp?
